Program 03 — Tree Production
Growing the trees that green Armenia
ATP’s nurseries are the foundation of all restoration work. Every forest, community planting, and landscape project begins here — with seeds collected in Armenia and carefully grown into healthy, climate-resilient trees. ATP operates four full-scale nurseries and more than 100 Backyard Nursery growers, a decentralized network that preserves native genetic diversity and ensures a continuous supply of locally adapted trees.

Nurseries
A national production system
ATP’s nursery network is designed as a complete production system supporting large-scale restoration. Each nursery plays a specific role in growing trees for forests, community landscapes, and sustainable agricultural use — ensuring all planting material is locally sourced, climate-adapted, and grown under consistent quality standards.
Karin Nursery — Aragatsotn
Established in 1996, Karin is ATP’s first nursery and one of its environmental education centers. It produces 64 species of broadleaf, evergreen, and ornamental trees and shrubs, with over 200,000 plants in active production. With Khachpar, Karin co-leads production for ATP’s flagship urban greening site, Matenadaran.
Khachpar Nursery — Ararat
Khachpar supports ATP’s Community Tree Planting program with 54 species of trees and shrubs and over 100,000 plants growing on site. It supplies diverse planting material for community greening — and, with Karin, grows the trees destined for the Matenadaran site.
John & Artemis Mirak Forestry Nursery — Lori
Margahovit is ATP’s — and Armenia’s — largest forestry production site, growing 2.5–3 million seedlings at any time, plus 40,000 in the Bilezikian greenhouse. In 2025 the Mirak nursery alone supplied 774,994 seedlings for national afforestation. Its legacy of family commitment now spans four generations.
“The Betty” Nursery — Vayots Dzor
The Betty Nursery in Chiva specializes in fruit and nut trees for community planting and rural distribution — 24 heritage varieties including Armenia’s endemic apricot, plus apples, pears, cherries, walnuts, almonds, and pomegranates. It honors the legacy of Elizabeth “Betty” Bedrosian Howell.
Backyard Nursery growers
ATP works with more than 130 Backyard Nursery growers who cultivate seedlings in their own homes and communities. This decentralized model expands national production, preserves local genetic diversity, engages rural households directly in restoration, and improves rural livelihoods.

Urban Greening
Armenia Tree Project's Community Tree Planting program transforms public spaces into green, living environments — planting trees in schools, kindergartens, hospitals, parks, churchyards, cultural sites, and community spaces in both urban and rural areas. These projects improve local ecosystems, strengthen climate resilience, and create healthier, more livable environments while building long-term community ownership of green spaces.

Environmental Education
ATP's Environmental Education program builds environmental awareness and practical skills among students, teachers, and communities nationwide. Through hands-on learning and direct engagement with nature, it fosters long-term responsibility for the environment and strengthens the next generation of environmental stewards.
